Paying for a gap year in Africa
How much does it cost?
As you plan your gap year in Africa, money will be one of the most important things to consider. In addition to the programme price that you will pay to cover your project placement, accommodation, and meals, other expenses will need to be considered, including:
- Round-trip flight to Africa
- Excursions in Africa
- Some meals (for example, during excursions)
- Daily transportation to the volunteer project (if necessary)
- Vaccinations (if necessary)
- Travel insurance
Our partners at TravelWorks recommend that you bring along somewhere between £150 and £400 per month for your gap year in Africa, depending on where you will be volunteering. In countries like Ghana and Burkina Faso, you will not need as much money as in South Africa and Kenya, for example.
