Volunteering in Mozambique - Gap Year

The coastal East African country of Mozambique has had a very tumultuous past, but has regained political stability and become a fantastic volunteering destination in recent years. Volunteering in Mozambique, you will have the chance to lend a hand in the field of social work or marine conservation. From working with Mozambican children to diving with whale sharks, you are sure to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience on your gap year in Mozambique.

Volunteering in Mozambique: Social

Your morning work in the social programme with TravelWorks will be in a preschool in the village of Vilanculos. You will help to prepare lessons and possibly even do some teaching of your own.

  • Working in an orphanage
  • Rebuilding homes destroyed by Cyclone Favio in 2007
  • Helping villagers to improve their English skills
  • Renovating local schools

During your gap year in Mozambique, you will stay in a shared beach camp room with other volunteers in coastal Vilanculos, not far from the famous Bazaruto Archipelago.

Volunteering in Mozambique: Marine Conservation

If you choose TravelWorks’ marine conservation project in Mozambique, you will start the programme with a PADI diving certification course. When you have completed this, you will have the chance to use your new skills as you volunteer to help conserve the local marine life, including whale sharks and manta rays. Do not worry about being harmed by these animals – these gentle giants are entirely harmless to humans.

You work in the ocean conservation project could include:

  • Collecting data about animal behaviour
  • Protecting sea turtle clutches
  • Diving to the coral reefs
  • Photographing animals for identification
  • Surveying coastal areas

Your accommodation in the marine protection project will be a volunteer house at the beach in Tofo, where you will stay with other volunteers.
